Eco-Friendly Things To Do During Lockdown
After months of being in self-quarantine and working from home, we are not yet at the end and us Melburnians now have another 6 weeks to stay indoors! I have decided to write up a few tips that you can do to ensure you spend your time and energy on the positive and take this opportunity to create a more sustainable lifestyle. Hopefully some or all of these interest you and help inspire you to make better choices for you and the planet!
Some Simple Switches
Switch to a sustainable Search Engine - Ecosia. While we are spending so much time at home, we are bound to be doing heaps of searches, so make a switch to an eco-friendly search engine that plants trees with those searches. This is a new discovery of mine and I love the concept - I have even downloaded the mobile app!
Your Bank Account
Believe it or not but there are some banks out there doing some pretty great things like investing money into sustainability. Switch your bank to one that is ethical and green, like Bank Australia! Bank Australia say their money is clean which means they don't loan to industries like coal, nuclear weapons or live animal export but rather creating positive impacts for people and the planet.
We are all working from home or spending heaps of time indoors but making sure you keep some time aside each day for some exercise will work wonders for your physical and mental health. This can be a walk in the park with the dogs, a stretch session or even a PT session! P.S BenefitLab is great (only because he is my PT and he is amazing!)
Around The House
Go through all of your clothing and create a few piles. One for 'keep', one for 'sell' and one for 'throw out'. The pile for 'keep' you can, well, keep. The 'sell' pile can be uploaded to an online platform like Depop. You can sell all of your clothes that still hold value on to someone else who will love them. The last pile that we call 'throw away' is the one we are going to recycle to Manrags. They accept all of your old clothing so that they can recycle it into new clothing! How cool is that?
Take the time to turn room by room into a plastic or waste free room. This isn't something that happens overnight but we can do little things here and there to head in that direction. Read up our blog on Ways to Reduce Plastic Waste for more tips on this!
If you have some space in your garden then definitely give this a go. Its so satisfying growing your own veggies and being able to pick them and cook! being winter at the moment, these are the best to grow now:
- Broad beans
- Chinese broccoli and cabbage
- English spinach
If you don't have any space to do this, think about growing a few herbs in pots around the house or on your balcony!
Things To Do
New Cooking Styles
One thing we have recently done is started to make heaps of slow cooker dishes. We got the slow cooker as a gift 2 weeks ago and no joke we have made 6 or 7 dishes already! We have pulled out the recipes books and started making dishes we haven't even tackled before.
Try some DIY options at home. Currently on our to do list is to sand and repaint a chest of drawers and do our DIY Beeswax Wrap Kit. Last week we made our own toothpaste! The amount of fun things to do around the house are endless. Let us know what your favorite DIY options are!
